Hi everybody,
I've been looking for a way to get around buying a new air filter. The dealers want about $32 for a new one. So, I took my old original air filter, cut out and removed as mush of the paper element as possible. Then I went down to Wal-mart and bought foam used in industrial wet-vac vacuums. The come in cylindrical form for about $3. I cut the foam to the size of the air filter frame where the paper element used to be, then soaked it in oil and squeezed it out. I used velcro strips from work to hold it in place. Now I can remove the filter element and clean it from time to time without buying a new one. To top it off, I got an extra side benifit of a little more mid range acceleration. The exhaust sound in deeper too. I think it's because the engine now breathes better. Remember, I have modified the exhaust, removed the spacer and jetted up one size. I think I finally stumbled on the missing link to a faster Savage. I let more air in because to new foam element is not as thick. As long as I clean it regularly I don't think there will be any adverse affects. Just trying to save you folks a little money and give you a little boost of hp. Ride Safe. For those of you holed up for winter, spring is coming.
